Are you getting tired of grabbing at things hoping that they can keep your head above the swamping muck of your life? Has the pressure and false security that comes from surviving with style lost its luster yet? What are you going to run to when the next thing that you grab turns into dust?
I almost drowned…
I remember when I almost drowned. I was a little boy visiting my big brother Marcus. I decided to jump in the deep end of the pool. I was way in over my head, for real. I started to panic and began grabbing at anything I could to save me from drowning. Unfortunately, I was surrounded by nothing but water.
Every grabbing motion was useless.
At that moment all I could do was yell for help as my head bobbed in and out of the water. Suddenly, I felt someone’s arms grab around my body and jumped in to save me.
It was Marcus…
Someone outside of myself saved my life.
Because I couldn’t save myself.
My brother jumped into where I was to save me and bring me to safety.
Drowning in sin
I was drowning in my sins. Jesus “jumped” into the world, died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead to save me.
This is what the Gospel does. It saves us from drowning in our sins.
All my grabbing is useless. Girlfriends, sex, porn, music, and food, nothing could keep me from drowning. I cried out for salvation and realized Jesus was there with his arms around me.
So stop grabbing at things that have no substance. Cry out to Jesus for He alone can save you from drowning in your sins.
Going deeper:Â What sins are you drowning in? Have you accepted Jesus in your life? How has the Gospel saved you from drowning in your sins?
